MINUTES OF AN INFORMAL MEETING BETWEEN LASALLIAN ASSOCIATION FOR MISSION IN BRISTOL AND BISHOP DECLAN JANUARY 8TH 2002

Present: Bro Sean, Bro Owen, Bishop Declan, John Lux, Mark

We began with a prayer.

Owen spoke about the Lasallian exploration of association and how the Lasallian Association for Mission in Bristol has grown out of this. The documents “Bristol Lasallian Association-Some Ideas” and the October 2002 report on the “Progress and Plans of the Lasallian Association for Mission in Bristol” were presented to the bishop to take away and look at.

The provision of youth ministry in the diocese is being looked at afresh. There is a need for trained people in the diocese. Young people have to be listened to and their needs answered but not necessarily in the traditional manner. The role of the Catholic School as a vehicle for ministry needs to be carefully looked at. How might Lasallian ministry fit into this vision?

The LAMB asked for and discussed with Bishop Declan the following:-
1. Does LAMB have the bishop’s support and “blessing”? – Declan gave his support for its work.
2. The possibility of a diocesan property for use in the future if and when the longer term aim of a permanent Lasallian community is realised. – Declan was unable to give assurance of a property but has invited dialogue with Mark on the issue. At the moment St James Priory is not being resided in but it doesn’t actually belong to the Diocese of Clifton and so Declan was unable to give permission for its use by LAMB.
3. Sean and Owen appreciated meeting Bishop Declan and saw value in dialogue between the De La Salle Brothers and the Diocese of Clifton.
4. Bp Declan asked if he could come along to one of the retreats/young people days at 1B. The weekend retreat at the beginning of April was suggested. Mark will liase with the bishop and Tom Bigwood.

Bishop Declan suggested that a meeting with Fr Bosco MacDonald at Holy Family, Patchway might be a good idea to hear what the thoughts of the Youth Committee are and how LAMB might fit into those plans. Mark will get in touch with Fr Bosco and arrange a meeting with him.

Bishop Declan was encouraged by the vision and momentum of LAMB.
