Letter to Rt Rev Declan Lang, 26 November, 2002 26th November 2002 Dear Bishop Declan, I am writing to you on behalf of the Lasallian Association for Mission in Bristol to ask if it would be possible to meet and speak with you in the very near future. We are a group of teachers, chaplains and others working in conjunction with the De La Salle Brothers here in Bristol. We have been meeting together since November 2001 to discuss and discern how God may be calling us to work both with the De La Salle Brothers and with the local Church. We believe we have something to offer young people in Bristol and Bath, especially those who have been to St Cassian’s Retreat Centre in Kintbury. We wish to deepen their spiritual experience and provide a support to them. We have invited several small groups of young people to come along to a Lasallian Gathering on Sunday 1st December at 1B Sydenham Road to pray, decorate and take part in craft workshops. The community at 1B have kindly given us rooms to use for group discussion, prayer, workshops and celebrating the eucharist. Our aim is that this will continue to develop as a centre for spiritual support for young people. The Lasallian Association would like to see this develop into a community of young volunteers led by the De La Salle Brothers and associates. This community would be trained to be youth workers and become a support to the schools and parishes of Bristol. We therefore feel we have reached the moment when we need to begin “building bridges” with the diocese and discuss with you our plans both in the short term and the long term so that you are aware of what we would like to do. We would like to have your permission, support and ideas for the future. Fr Richard McKay spoke to us last Saturday to offer us guidance on Child Protection Issues and we have spoken to Fr Tom Finnegan. I have spoken with Ms Mary McGintey about our plans. If you could write, telephone or e-mail me with a date(s) when this might be possible we would greatly appreciate it. Brother Owen, the Deputy Provincial from Oxford would be happy to join with myself and Mr John Lux the Head of RE at St Thomas More School to speak with you. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely M. A. Quinn |
